Bulldog

English Bulldog Puppy

Bulldogs are usually wide, and medium sized with a short pair of legs. The body and head of the dog are massive, and the legs often appear almost too small to carry the weight of the bulldog. However, keep in mind that their legs are very muscular. The body of a bulldog has a lot of extra skin including facial skin that extends to the sides of their eyes. The muzzle on a bulldog is quite wide and short. They typically have a black nose with large nostrils and upper lips just below the nose that hang. Their teeth come down into an under bite, and their tail is usually straight.

The coat of a bulldog is short and smooth, yet shiny. The colors can range quite a bit but most often they are a solid white color, but may also have red, yellow and gray hues in their coat.

The appearance of a bulldog is intimidating to many, but the fact of the matter is that they are among the gentlest breeds of dogs. They are often very loyal to their owners, and rarely exhibit behavior that is aggressive. They are also very good with children, despite popular belief.

They are a determined breed that is not as intelligent as other breeds. They can be a bit stubborn and persistent at times, which can make them a bit hard to train. They look for human affection and soak it up whenever they can receive it. They do require quite a bit of attention from the humans in their lives to remain happy.
At times, when they perceive themselves to be the leader of their pack, they can attempt to dominate other dogs and exhibit alpha male behavior. It is important that you asset yourself as their leader from the very beginning and make it clear that you are in charge by enforcing the appropriate rules and now allowing the dog to do what it wants at its leisure at all times.

Sometimes they may guard their objects, including furniture and toys. When they display this behavior, it is clear that they think that they are the leader of the pack and you need to show them that you are the boss. Often times, these behaviors will diminish when the owner starts to assert themselves as leaders. For the most part, bulldogs that feel that they are the leader of the pack live stressful lives trying to keep you in line, and are willing to relinquish the duties.

Bulldogs are usually 53 to 55 pounds, with females weighing slightly less. They are prone to breathing problems because they have smaller than normal windpipes. Bulldogs are also prone to having poor eyesight and often suffer from heat stroke in hot rooms and cars. Puppies are usually birthed through C-sections because of their broad heads, which can complicate the birthing process.

Bulldogs are excellent dogs for families and despite their gruff appearance; they are actually quite affectionate and nice on the whole. They are great for living in an apartment, but do remain very inactive indoors. They require daily walks.
